Editorial Leader

Amir Vera is an award-winning journalist with bylines in national, international  and local news outlets. His published stories have attracted millions of readers and viewers across multiple platforms.

Vera is currently an editor for The LA Local, a nonprofit news start up that looks to cover underserved communities in Los Angeles. Vera's coverage areas are Inglewood and South LA. 

​

Prior to The LA Local, Vera spent nearly a decade at CNN where he was a reporter, and eventually a breaking news editor, covering the history-defining stories domestically and across the globe. 

Systems Builder

Amir Vera is an instrumental force in newsrooms and nonprofit boards, instituting systems, creating processes, managing workflows and providing guidelines that are still in use years after his service and tenure.

As a local and national board member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Vera overhauled and modernized the organization's foundational documents including its journalism style guide, bylaws, operating procedures and constitution in order to protect NABJ's financial integrity.  

 

Vera also facilitated the creation of the Health and Science Task Force in 2024 and the restructuring of the Digital Journalism Task Force in 2022, both of which are currently active.

As a journalist, Vera consistently identifies emerging trends and stories before they break into the mainstream, bringing new viewers across multiple platforms to both domestic, national and international outlets.

As a nonprofit board member, Vera routinely rebuilt local chapters and organizations to institute digital-first approaches through social media and newsletters to engage members beyond in-person meetings and events, widening the organization's reach.
